Overview
“the more powerful that technology becomes, the more indispensable good teachers are." (Fullan)
YouTube, wikis and blogs, podcasts and the internet generate a glut of information. In the 21st century all the information a student could possibly need is available via electronic sources: databases, electronic journal subscriptions and internet searches, for instance.
The challenge, therefore, remains to develop and provide learning environments, activities and experiences consistent with the context of a 21st century destination: not to fill students' heads with what was once considered as the finite body of knowledge on a certain area but to develop in students understanding: characterized by evaluation, thinking, application and other related skills.
Classroom Technologies
At Brigidine the incorporation of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) into all subjects is a requirement. More than 300 Virtual Classrooms have been created by teaching staff in the College, accessible to students and parents at home as well as in the school grounds, via the Portal, collating documents and tasks, links to resources and collaborative repositories of student work.
A wireless network throughout the College allows students access to a range of resources. Pods of 28 Laptops in eleven locations give flexibility to these resources and are complemented by four computer laboratories in the Library and IT teaching areas. Some specialist classrooms such as the Textiles and Design rooms and the Music rooms have desktop computers and in Visual Arts there is a dedicated Macintosh digital imaging lab.
The College portal plays an important role in our communication and connectedness with current parents. Student progress, student timetables, calendars, notices, the newsletter and co-curricular programmes are all available on this site.
