Performing on the Sydney Opera House Stage

A memorable opportunity to perform at the Sydney Opera House recently gave Catherine Miller (Year 9) the chance to share the stage with some of Australia’s leading musicians over three consecutive nights.

As part of Gondwana Choirs, she performed alongside The Cat Empire and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in a major production at one of Australia’s most iconic venues. We caught up with her to hear more about the experience, the highlights of performing on the Sydney Opera House stage and what she learned along the way.

1. Can you tell us a little about your experience performing at the Sydney Opera House with Gondwana Choirs, The Cat Empire and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra?

Performing at the Sydney Opera House was such an amazing experience. It was really fun to be a part of such a big production, and meet so many talented and kind people. It was great to see The Cat Empire perform and make music live and see the audience get involved.

2. What was the most memorable moment for you throughout the experience?

My most memorable moment was definitely performing on the night. Standing on the stage and seeing the audience while singing alongside so many talented musicians was an incredible feeling. It was something I had worked towards during rehearsals, so finally performing was really special. And seeing the crowd dance and sing along was really great.

3. Performing alongside professional musicians and artists like The Cat Empire and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra must have been an incredible learning experience. What did you learn or take away from working with them?

I learnt a lot about performing professionally and how important teamwork is. Watching The Cat Empire and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra perform showed me how much preparation and practice goes into a professional production. And although it’s important and fast paced it’s really fun.

4. How has your experience at Brigidine helped you with your music outside of school?

My experiences at Brigidine, especially being involved in the musicals and having normal music lessons, have made me more interested in music. They have given me opportunities to sing and perform and have helped me become more confident. They have also encouraged me to enjoy music outside of school and take opportunities like performing at the Sydney Opera House.

5. What has been your favourite part of this whole experience, and what would you say to another Brigidine student who might be thinking about giving something like this a go?

My favourite part has been getting to perform with so many talented people and being part of something that I will remember for a long time. I would definitely encourage other Brigidine students to give opportunities like this a go. It’s fun, exciting, you meet new people and your dancing and singing with friends.
