Through The AIDA Project, our Student Consultancy Board is in the process of reviewing AI policies from schools across Australia and overseas. They are comparing different approaches, considering what might work in our own context and preparing recommendations to help inform our approach here at Brigidine. In doing so, they are taking a leading role in a field that is still notably underrepresented by women. Their voices, perspectives and questions are an important part of shaping how AI is understood and used in education. They are not simply learning about the conversation around AI, but helping to lead it.
At the same time, in Thrive, Year 9 students are designing and piloting an AI literacy program for Year 7 students. In developing lessons for younger students, they are also deepening their own understanding of this rapidly changing technology. They are learning to ask important questions about how AI can be used thoughtfully, responsibly and effectively.
Both initiatives are good examples of student agency in action. Students are being trusted with meaningful questions and real audiences, and they are learning that their ideas can have a genuine impact on the community around them.
